OPCRITICAL – NOT MY AMERICA

OpCritical’s “Not My America” doesn’t feel like a comfortable listen, and that’s clearly the point. It comes across like a song written with a sense of urgency rather than polish, as if the band is trying to get something off their chest before it gets watered down. From the opening moments, it has that tense, restless energy that makes you pay attention whether you want to or not.

The lyrics lean heavily on repetition, especially the “I was raised to be proud” lines that keep coming back in different emotional shapes. Instead of feeling lazy, it starts to feel like someone trying to hold onto an idea that’s slipping away in real time. The “give me peace, give me truth” refrain hits like a chant more than a hook, and it sticks in your head in a way that isn’t exactly pleasant, but definitely effective.

What really makes the track stand out is how it spills over into its video. The retro racing chaos, the desert heat, the reckless crashes, it all feels a bit over-the-top at first but then it clicks. It’s basically saying the same thing as the song: everything is moving fast, nobody’s really in control, and everyone keeps acting like there won’t be consequences until there are. The Road Rash-style inspiration fits that idea surprisingly well, even if it’s a little wild.

By the end, “Not My America” doesn’t try to wrap things up neatly. It leaves you sitting with the discomfort instead. That might divide listeners on its own. Some will see it as powerful protest music, others might think it leans too hard into its message. But either way, OpCritical has made something that feels alive, messy, and very much of its time and maybe that’s exactly what it was aiming for.
