C’batch’s Our Little Pooh Pea (The Last Light) is a project which focuses on reinterpretation, atmosphere, and the various possibilities that arise when a pre-existing musical idea is looked at from a different point of view. The ‘Cinematic’ version of the project provides a particularly striking way of approaching it, involving the transformation of a previously recorded guitar performance into a new arrangement shaped by electronic and atmospheric production. Instead of considering the original performance as a completed piece, C’batch uses it as the basis for a different kind of creative approach, this being in line with the EP’s wider investigation into the various dimensions of his work.
A key aspect of the project is the transition from “Round & Round” to “Our Little Pooh Pea (The Last Light) 4 – Cinematic”. The guitar solo was first played over “Round & Round”, but C’batch later realised that the performance could stand on its own apart from that original context. When placed in a cinematic setting, the guitar becomes the main expressive component, surrounded by electronic and ambient textures. The final piece lies within the genres of Electronic, Dream Pop, Ambient and Experimental, yet still retains the organic quality of the guitar performance.
The EP also includes an intentionally open emotional atmosphere. Since the lyrics do not lead the listener to any specific interpretation, there is room for personal reflection and for each individual to create their own story. “The Last Light” indicates a stage lying between darkness and hope, an ending which at the same time can symbolise a beginning. This concept gives the project a dreamy and reflective quality, the music being able to evoke images such as the final scene of a film, a memory, a journey or a parting without stating what the exact meaning should be.
For C’batch, this release is a continuation of the creative principle that can be seen in all of his archival work and the The Vault series, past compositions and performances can be looked at again and then reworked and given a new life as a result of modern production. Our Little Pooh Pea (The Last Light) illustrates this method by means of a project which links an existing performance with a new musical setting. It serves as a careful example of how a recorded idea can develop into something with a different atmosphere, point of view and purpose while still keeping its original foundation.
