Music that doesn’t try too hard, and simply is. It’s the kind of sound that LED exude with their debut single, “Lies All Lies”. This isn’t a song created by some music industry drones in a sterile glass office. Instead, LED formed in the heart of a teenage summer at a film camp near Malibu, where Layne (aka Layne Olivia), Lockett and Edie Yvonne bonded. The group came together as a means to create music for a short film, but it quickly blossomed into an actual band. And “Lies All Lies”, their first song, is a bit of a self-assured opening salvo. It’s raw, emotive, and has a sneer that conjures memories of being an angsty teenager and playing your music as loud as you can, to no one in particular.

“Lies All Lies” is equally balanced sonically. It references the heyday of early 2000s alternative rock, but is much more tethered in the present. There’s some Cranberries-edged air, some Paramore-grit, and a lot of the breezy beabadoobee-esque indie authenticity. The vocals are front and center, unfiltered and perhaps a little unhinged, but almost biting in their honesty. It sounds like a singer pouring out words and feelings they’ve been trying to keep in for far too long. The drums pound, the guitars buzz and the melody drifts, just a little sugary sweet to keep the proceedings from dissolving into petulant teenage rage. The band is rebellious, but they aren’t angry. They’re emotive, but not soft. A difficult balance to strike, but LED seem to do it almost instinctively.
“Lies All Lies” mostly just sounds like a beginning. This is not merely a song. It’s the start of something. The connection between the trio is palpable, a frenetic energy that’s tangible. A shared ferocity, a need to be heard. LED have been hitting LA locales like the Whisky and the Hotel Café, but with this kind of creative buzz, it’s not hard to envision the trio playing festival mainstages soon. They don’t just sound good, they feel real. And realness is something people are always craving, regardless of whether they’re 16 or 60.
