It’s the type of song that envelopes you from start to finish. Deeply emotive and story telling, Michellar’s latest single “Conquer all with Love” centres around the idea of a love that perseveres through all of life’s obstacles. It’s a song that hinges entirely on trust and togetherness. Accompanying the sentiment of the lyrics is a retro yet contemporary production and feel. Not at all lost in an attempt to sound like the 90s, it plays on a deeply nostalgic and emotionally charged sound, especially in the introduction that washes over you like an old picture book left out overnight, with new pages added.
Written in San Francisco and recorded and produced both in the UK and in London, with Toby of Tobias Wilson Music Ltd, Staffordshire, you can hear a seamless unification of each part. The lyrical component and lead vocals recorded in London merge with the production and editing in a way that most songs recorded in disparate locations and studios do not. The vocal interplay and harmonies from Harrison Black and Christina Rntd are clear, calculated and each component feels in-step with each other; an unspoken communication between the producers and recording artists was necessary and is immediately heard. It is a refreshing departure from an assembly line factory production; “Conquer all with Love” oozes authenticity.
Musically you can hear the sly admiration for The Police and the tug and pull that carries the emotional component of the track with Sonny & Cher-esque call and response at key intervals. These cues, however, are not overpowering, nor are they shoehorned into the narrative of the song but merely help shape the language and references of the artist and lyricist; they are homages not placeholders. The language used in the song is on the nose and entirely free of ego but in the best way possible. One of the best parts of the single is that at no point does it feel inaccessible or pandering. The song is a ballad of sorts to the everyday hero that chooses love in all instances even when it is unfathomable.
