“Power Hug”: A Warm Embrace of Love in All Its Forms

The first debut ep of Trash Pals, entitled ‘Power Hug’, is rich in acts of love — self-love, kindness, and even romance. Six composed and predictable songs remarkably made by a duo of Conor Rayne and Gabe Schnider seem to be both original and relatable at the same time. The music seeks to distance the listener from the surrounding mayhem, providing pleasure and joy with every note. The first song, “Blossom”, brings the desired mood with its soft and gentle opening. Everything from the lyrics, which talk about new life, to the subtle riffs of the guitar and the singing of the two, comes together. It is pleasing for the audience and makes them ready for the rest of the EP.

The following song, “Garden”, still maintains the upbeat energy from the first song whilst mixing in some indie rock elements. The lush flute sounds of the instrumentation imitate the visual of a growing flourishing garden, which represents great relationships and the beauty that is patience. “All This Time” is different because it is more centered on themes of self-evaluation and self-assurance while being alone. The last part of the song presents a live recording of an improvisation, which seems to enhance the emotionality that was present in what they were trying to convey. “Only You” once again brings a different tune. The song is more soulful and its lyrics speak of deep emotion with intimacy perfect for personal connection with the partner.

“The Spaceman” adds an engaging touch as he portrays the turmoil of overstimulation with multilayered percussions and striking energy. It’s a sound in music and, more figuratively, finding order in disorder. Rounding the EP is “Good Things”, a positive and encouraging song that caps the collection. Its rhetoric shows listeners that love, whatever form it is, is worth trying for. With ‘Power Hug’, Trash Pals have completed an EP that possesses an impression of being handcrafted and, so to speak, very personal. It’s an appreciation of silent love, an offering of hope and warmth in a cold and cruel world.
