Sparks in the Shadows – A Deep Dive into ‘Causing A Commotion’

The first thing to note about The New Citizen Kane’s recent release ‘Causing A Commotion’ is that it sounds exactly like a mid-summer night’s heatwave. The EP perfectly evokes the euphoria of wanting with an almost cinematic quality. Evolving around the sultry lead single “Subconscious”, the latest release works both as a cohesive full-length experience and a sneak preview of a much grander concept ahead with the recently announced album ‘PSYCHEDELIKA’. The body of work that Kane has released as The New Citizen Kane up until now is heavily electronic, yet not at the cost of losing any emotive qualities. Balancing hypnotic beats with airy synths, with sprinklings of an almost too-human undertone, the sound can only be described as being for that singular moment between the club and the after-party; when your emotions are high, but you’re still replaying the evening in your head (over and over again).

Standout cuts on the EP include the opening “Meet Me On Street Corners (Synthphonica Radio Mix)” which lays down an immediate strong-stomping dancefloor disposition, thanks to its bright and infectious groove. “Hearts Aren’t Made Of Wood ’25”, the slowed down ballad that we all need in 2025. “Ratbag Joy (Alternative Version)” is already a cult-followed fan-favourite, with its warped and stripped back edges and raw, hedonistic chaos which lends itself so well to the sheen of some of the other songs on the EP. Of course, the undoubted centrepiece is “Subconscious”, a song torn between submission and restraint, a deeply personal and romantic confessional with two mixes that perfectly encapsulate this struggle between mind and heart.

Individually, each song is a pin-prick of a different colour, but collectively it creates a contiguous line of emotive thread running throughout. From beginning to end, this is an EP that is intrinsically enticing and unnerving, sassy and sincere, shameless and self-effacing. ‘Causing A Commotion’ is all this and more and it cements The New Citizen Kane’s sound and reputation as being about much more than the summertime highs that draw you in: it’s a lingering aural pleasure that draws you down into Kane’s world with it.
