You can’t tear it up- 50mething

At 58, former dancer and garden builder turned recording artist 50mething makes an unlikely but compelling entrance into the music business with his original single, You Can’t Tear It Up. Inspired by a BBC documentary on the sharing of intimate images, the track confronts a chilling truth of modern life: in the digital age, once something is released into the online world, there is no negative to destroy — no way to truly take it back. On the surface, “You Can’t Tear It Up” glows with a distinctly 80s sensibility. Layered programmed drums, crisp percussion, and shimmering synth textures create a buoyant, nostalgic pulse. The rhythm is confident and propulsive, transforming what could have been a heavy-handed lament into something deceptively infectious. You find yourself moving to it almost instinctively.

The production is where the single truly excels. A hybrid groove — fusing live-feeling drums with electronic elements — mirrors the song’s central tension: humanity colliding with technology. There’s a subtle melodic and textural nod to Todd Rundgren, particularly reminiscent of his work with Utopia. Like those recordings, the arrangement remains playful and bright even as the subject matter darkens, creating an engaging emotional contrast.  the song refuses to soften its message. What begins in trust and private intimacy spirals into betrayal, exposure, and permanence. The repeated refrain lands with stark clarity — once it’s out there, it cannot be undone. The chant-like chorus underscores the helplessness of trying to erase damage in a world that never forgets.

As the track unfolds, its emotional weight deepens. Lines referencing shame, lost freedom, and the urge to disappear cut sharply against the upbeat instrumentation. The danceable energy doesn’t dilute the message; it amplifies it. The discomfort is intentional — and effective. Written, arranged, and performed by 50mething (aka Paul Jenner), the single also reflects a broader creative awakening. With over 70 completed, unreleased tracks and distribution through DITTO, he is gradually unveiling a substantial back catalogue shaped by personal and global events alike — from wars in Gaza and Ukraine to AI’s rise and the death of George Floyd. His January release, “Slowly Through the Night,” addressed his own 2024 cancer diagnosis, making this new chapter feel both courageous and timely. “You Can’t Tear It Up” proves that age is no barrier to relevance — or urgency. It’s a modern cautionary tale wrapped in retro sheen: danceable, thoughtful, and quietly unsettling. In a world where mistakes echo forever, 50mething has found a way to make us confront that reality — even as we keep dancing.
