C’BATCH – I GUESS YOU WANT IT THIS WAY
‘C’batch’s I Guess You Want It This Way’ takes one composition and turns it into a six-track listening experience, with each version providing its own interpretation of that piece. The tracks do not act as individual songs strung together instead, but rather revolve around a common hook, verse melody and reggae base. This method gives the EP a definite identity while at the same time enabling the composition to be shown in various forms. The end result is a project which prompts listeners to keep hearing the familiar elements over and over again while thinking about how each interpretation shapes the song in its own way.
The collective effect of the six versions is that their similarities offer a basis on which to compare the differences between them. By returning to the same central material throughout the EP, a feeling of familiarity is achieved, while the different interpretations stop the project from appearing to be just a simple repetition. Each version contributes a further point of view to the same composition, which makes the entire release more extensive than a typical single recording. When listened to from start to finish, the tracks act as parts of a wider presentation of one song rather than competing for attention as individual pieces.

A lot of history is associated with the creation of this piece. About 26 years ago, C’batch was encouraged to work on a reggae song, though an initial version had only almost reached completion and the main hook as well as the verse melody stayed with him until he went back to the song in 2026 and finished the lyrics. The EP is also dedicated to the famous Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, whom C’batch met at Heathrow Airport in 2001, thus giving the project a significant connection with the reggae tradition which inspired it.
That one piece is presented in six different interpretations is what makes I Guess You Want It This Way stand out. Although there is a consistent musical base which provides the listener with something familiar throughout the EP, the various interpretations broaden the character of the release. Rather than offering a single, definite version of the song, C’batch enables the piece to be experienced from several points of view. It is therefore an essential element of the project to have the six-track format, transforming one finished idea into a more complete musical presentation.
