‘Three’: A Journey Through Memory and Meaning

Owen Young’s EP ‘Three’, the third part of his Muddy River series, is a short but meaningful collection of songs. Compared to the previous sections titled On A Day Like That and Town Line, this EP mainly dwells on issues of passion, disunity, and self-contemplation which was further catalyzed by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The first song in this album is “Voices In The Dust”. It has sentiments that are emotional yet very nostalgic lyrics and a soft tune that brings out the bittersweet feeling of remembering back.

Young uses this approach to make the song relatable and easy for people to connect with, thereby setting an excellent tone for the EP. “Runnin’ Down The River” is the second track. It’s a soulful song about loss and yearning for past ideals sung by somebody who grew up in the sixties. With acoustic strings and light percussion used in it, gentle music adds to the reflective mood created by this song, giving us glimpses of memories and dreams that seem unattainable.

“That Could Have Been You”, the final song, is a lot stronger. It’s a voice raising awareness of the selfishness and little care during the pandemic. Its sharper words and stronger beat make it distinct with a powerful performance by Young leaving an unforgettable mark. Owen Young exudes profound sentiments and addresses critical matters in just three songs. ‘Three’ exhibits his skill of bringing personal thoughts to universal music language.
